The name suggests a place where entries ought to be carefully distinguished. What fascinates me is how much can be misfiled under a single molecule: its chemical identity, an animal observation, an approved medicine, a compounded preparation and a personal report. I’m here for the awkward history. PT-141 grew out of melanotan-II development, with sexual effects redirecting work that began with skin tanning. The later approval for acquired, generalized HSDD in premenopausal women is narrower than the reputation the molecule has acquired.

At first I admired the brain mechanism above everything else. The rat solicitation experiment and hamster reward experiment complicated that impression in a useful way. Wanting contact, responding physically and finding an experience rewarding are not simply different names for one outcome. I now value the distinctions more than the appealing mechanism alone.

Interpreting the pivotal trial results

The pivotal trials found improvements in desire and desire-related distress compared with placebo. In my judgement, neither dismissing these differences nor expanding them into a general promise about sex does the results justice. The women enrolled, the questionnaire outcomes and the adverse effects are all part of the finding.

My unanswered question concerns daily life: how do those measured changes feel outside the study, and why do the models divide wanting from reward?
